Exploring Middle-earth through mythology, highlighting the notable influences of Germanic and Scandinavian literature on the works of the Oxford philologist, notably in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, is the ambition of this book. It is because the Germanic and Scandinavian letters found an important echo in the novelist as in the academic: creation of names of places and characters, of fabulous creatures, revival of old literary motifs and invention of writing systems to imagine a new mythology. There was no work in France on the importance of these mythologies in Tolkien’s work. This is done: in ten chapters, R. Simek examines toponymy, linguistics, mythology, cosmology, runology or the geography of Middle-earth, while offering translations of several great texts from the Icelandic Middle Ages. All things that contributed to the medieval atmosphere of Middle-earth.
