Miniature nautical astrolabe. Was used for calculating latitude using Sun and Stars height. Scale reduced.
This instrument is a replica of the Nautical Astrolabe of the “Valance”, which is placed in the Kensington Museum and belonged to the Army of Philipe II (16th century).
The nautical astrolabe is simplified to measure the altitude of the stars for purposes of navigation. It’s heavier construction from those used on land was to compensate for the movement of the vessel at sea.
This beautiful instrument is made of brass and comes complete with wooden base and booklets explaining its use and historical context. The wooden base is ideal for placement of a commemorative plaque in recognition of achievement or an event.
