This instrument was designed to meet the need to predict the time of tidal changes. It relies on the intimate association with the rotation of the moon, which influences the tides as it rotates around the earth.
The Tide Calculator, or abacus, is used to predict the time of tide changes. In order to develop this piece, various instruments from the 16th and 17th centuries were studied, including astronomical compendiums, volvelles and abacuses.
