While swords took years to master, halberds required constant practice, and bows required great patience, maces were always surprisingly simple. Lift it high, bring it down hard, as the brutes say. However, with the increased use of plate armor and large shields, simple maces lost some of their effectiveness over time. So some blacksmiths came up with a clever way to solve this problem: add an iron tip on one side and a hammer head on the other. This way, armor could be pierced and wars won. Plus, there was no need for long years of tedious training for armies eager to wield this formidable hammer. The sum of these factors allowed the mace to be used for centuries after more complex tools, such as the crossbow, were used in war.
