Miniature nautical astrolabe. Was used to calculate latitude using the height of the sun and stars. Reduced scale.
This instrument is a replica of the nautical astrolabe of the "Valance", which is placed in the Kensington Museum and belonged to the army of Philip II (16th century).
The nautical astrolabe is simplified to measure the altitude of stars for navigation purposes. It is a heavier construction than those used on land to compensate for the motion of the ship at sea.
This beautiful instrument is made of brass and comes with a wooden base and brochures explaining its use and historical context. The wooden base is ideal for the placement of a commemorative plaque in recognition of an achievement or event.
