Character : According to circumstances, in turn father, husband, widower or bachelor, this old Venetian merchant is as rich as he is miserly, a true skinflint. He is as faudulent in business as he is stern with his servants. When not worried about money, Pantalone has but one thing in mind: finding a beautiful and very young girl to marry since he still sees himself as handsome and frisky. Useless to say, none of these beauties is interested in him as a husband. This character his very important in the Commedia dell’arte. Without him there can be no comedy because each one of his weaknesses allows the other characters to prey on him, particularly his servants who always attempt to steal from him in retaliation for his stinginess. He will usually have one or two daughters (Isabelle, Rosaure, Camille or Smeraldine) whom he finds difficult to marry off. They, in turn, are well served in their disobedience by smart and bold maidservants. Costume and Mask : The raspy voiced, Pantalone is an old, skinny hunched-over character. He wears long, red stockings, which he wore in his young days, but which are now too large for his frail legs. He shows a voluminous fly to attract attention to his manhood which, everyone around him agrees, is very much part of his past. He also dons soft slippers or Turkish sandals, a narrow red waistcoat with large buttons and a red cloak or, as pertinent to the development of his character, a black suit covered with a rich black cassock. His head covering is a Greek bonnet without edges; a purse hangs from his belt. His mask will be in pale tones (beige, pale brown or whitish) with a long, crooked and often warty nose. Pantalone shows a fine gray moustache and from his bony chin protrudes a goatee. -
Character : Harlequin is a humble, fun-loving, witty, buffoon, dumb, credulous and lazy servant. Always famished, his obsession with food brings him to appear more stupid than he really is in order to deceive his victim. He invents all sorts of tactics, stratagems, somersaults and acrobatics. The rest of the time, he seeks above all to lay around and avoid the least possible effort. Sometimes he is Columbine’s lover, and, therefore, Pedrolino’s rival. Costume and Mask : Harlequin’s original costume was a white suit so worn that he had constantly mend it with patches to hide the holes. Little by little it becomes a multicolored quilt of a suit. Thus was conceived Harlequin’s costume which everyone can now easily identify with its colorful diamond-shaped patches. Harlequin also carries a wooden bat, a slapstick, as a relic of his old trade as a cowherd in Bergamo. His mask is rather coarse. It is pug-nosed and shows a lump on the forehead, symbol of all the blows he has endured. His cheeks are gaunt as witness to his perpetual hunger. -

Character : The glutton hunchback with a falsetto voice can also adopt several roles: valet or servant, baker, landlord, monastery guard, peasant, merchant, soldier, bandit, thief. The fairies which leaned on his crib must have been witches because he has inherited mostly unpleasant traits: he shouts and becomes angry at anything, he is a brutal, vulgar, wicked, greedy robber and liar. His movements are slow and his unkempt appearance turn him into a simpleton, but his mind is sharp, particularly in his repartees as he adresses the audience directly. He is Harlequin’s enemy and a fight is more than likely to erupt every time they meet. This character does not play a large part in dramatic literature. He is much more present in Puppetry. Costume and Mask : He wears a white smock bound at the waist with a string and a pair of equally large white trousers. His typical hat is made in the shape of a white or gray sugarloaf. He never goes without an enormous club. His mask is often greenish or dark red with a large hawkishhook nose and his forehead is striated by prominent warty eyebrows.
